Sir Ian Taylor is a pioneering technology innovator from New Zealand, whose career reflects the country’s transformation from an agricultural economy to a leader in digital innovation.
Raised in a small East Coast village on the North Island, Ian experienced the arrival of electricity and telephones in his youth, and witnessed New Zealand’s first computer in the early 1960s.
His career journey is diverse: he labored in freezing works, sang in a rock band during the 60s and 70s, and served in the army. By 1980, he had earned a law degree and transitioned to television, experiencing the industry's evolution from black-and-white to digital.
In 1990, Ian founded Taylormade Productions on a handshake agreement. Starting with a $15,000 hard drive, it has now become Animation Research Ltd (ARL) and has grown to cover global sports events and create innovative solutions like air traffic control simulators, F1 race car simulators, and online risk assessment platforms. In 2019, Ian began Land of Voyagers, documenting Polynesian voyages to New Zealand.
Sir Ian’s accolades include induction into the New Zealand Hi-Tech Hall of Fame, being named North & South magazine’s New Zealander of the Year, and receiving the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Despite his achievements, Sir Ian attributes his success to his talented team and remains humble about his contributions.
