Billy Stairmand is New Zealand’s first-ever Olympic surfer who has competed professionally around the globe for 20 years and won the national title a record eight times.

He burst into the headlines when he beat the legendary 10-times world champion Kelly Slater in an international competition in Australia in 2011. But behind the scenes he has had to be positive in the face of adversity after the loss of his mother to cancer and his brother suddenly in a car crash.
