Suzanne McFadden

At the forefront of New Zealand media for almost four decades, Suzanne McFadden is an award-winning journalist, book author and podcaster – specialising in capturing the essence of people and sport.

A finalist in the Women of Influence Awards, Suzanne was the 2021 New Zealand Sports Journalist of the Year, was voted Qantas Sports Feature Writer of the Year two years running and is also a three-time winner at the New Zealand Magazine Media Awards.

In 2017, she was honoured as a Life Member of the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association. During her career, which included a decade in the NZ Herald sports department, Suzanne became internationally renowned for her on-the-spot coverage of the America’s Cup between 1995 and 2003, and again in 2021. She’s also covered Olympic and Commonwealth Games and numerous sporting world championships.

She’s been a regular contributing writer to newsroom.co.nz since its inception – becoming the foundation editor of LockerRoom, a section within Newsroom dedicated solely to women’s sport in 2018.

Formally, and informally, Suzanne has mentored at least a dozen young women in sports writing.  Suzanne has authored two books – Striking Gold (2016) and Honey (2024) – and hosts a sports podcast, SASS Talk, with Olympian Sarah Cowley-Ross. In 2024, Suzanne joined the Between Two Beers team, as a host of Reflections – private podcasts that serve as priceless memoirs.

Now a freelancer, she regularly MCs panel discussions on sport, and has a regular sports segment on TVNZ’s Breakfast.

Her proudest achievements, however, are being married to fellow journalist Eugene Bingham, raising two sons, and now spoiling two grandsons.
